Palomar Challenge Hill Climb Results 2009

June was crazy this year. A cool day and foggy with limited visibility all the way up. But riders who continued up to the observatory said the sun was out up there and it was glorious.

This year's winner Rick Bienias won with a great time of 48:26 which EXACTLY matched last year's winning time set by Drew Peterson. Matt Sheremeta bested his time from last year and again placed second. Herb Johnson at 65 years of age took 3rd overall, 1st in the 60+ division and even bested his time from last year by about 1.5 minutes!

Greg Mathy riding a fixed gear bike came in 4th overall and of course never stopped pedaling!

Steven Lamb took top honors in the 50+ class, Tracy Day in the 45+ class, Steve Ring in the 55+ class. Ralph Holmes was the oldest rider in the field at 66 years of age.

On the woman's side it was Ginger Crutchfield taking top honors with last year's winner Adrienne Brian coming in shortly behind and taking first in the 55+ class. Adrienne suffered a severe cycling accident in the last year and it is great to see here back on the bike competing again.

Lisa Eaton was first in the 40+ division, Beth Vanta was first in the 50+ division, and Mary Baker in the 60+ division.

The Tandem division was won by Elizabeth Jefferson and Chris Kostman.

The story of the day has to go to the Swan girls who both turned in great times at the ages of 10 and 12! Moriah Swan took the junior division and her older sister Hannah Swan took the youth division. Richard Swan, their proud dad stayed with the girls as they made their way up the mountain in the foggy weather.
